POTTER GROCERY STORE CLOSED
The Potter
Family Grocery Store closed its doors on
February 12, 2011.
Since that time, a group of volunteers have been working diligently to come up
with a way to reopen it.
A luncheon meeting was held at noon on
March 2nd with Jim Crandall,
an employee of the UNL Nebraska Cooperative Development Center.
He pointed out that several towns have cooperative owned grocery stores and gave
several examples.
A group of volunteers, including: Kirk and Jane Enevoldsen, Charleen
Herboldsheimer, Becky Yearous, Marilyn Sommers, Chrissie Borla, Peg Musil and
Hal Enevoldsen agreed to organize and advertise a Community Meeting for
March 24th, check with other
grocery stores in the area about satellite stores, sharing supplier drops, etc.,
put together a survey for the community and apply for a grant, which is due
March 31st.
The Community Meeting was held with 62 individuals present. The consensus
was that Potter needs a grocery store. Approximately $100,000 to $125,000 is
needed to reopen the store. The present owners are asking $75,000 for the
building, land and equipment. The rest of the approximation will be to stock
the store, pay for utilities, licenses, certifications, re-flooring, etc..
Volunteers will clean, paint, stock, etc.. The goal for Potter is to form a
cooperative, set a share cost, secure pledges for donations and purchase shares
in a cooperative, have the grant awarded, secure donations and collect for
shares, buy the building, land and equipment, hire a manager, stock the store,
and reopen it.
